I captured my first image on a Polaroid camera when I was about four years old and have had a camera near to hand ever since.
Born in London, I spent most of my formative years living between home in England, my grandparents in Ireland and travelling around much of Europe as my father worked and travelled with the motorsport scene from race circuit to circuit.
Having spent much of my younger years surrounded by machinery, engineering seemed to be the logical step to take as a first career move, but it wasn't too long before there was a shift in direction. The noise and smells of motorsport still run through my veins but they were not the only senses that were awoken in my early years. Watching photographers at work in the paddocks of race circuits and around the tracks fascinated me. It was this craft that lured me to the world of art and graphics. I spent three years at the Unversity of the Arts London as part of my apprenticeship which lead to a 25 year career in the graphics and printing industry. During that time I worked on other peoples images, however, I am now showcasing my own work visualising and expressing the experiences I encounter.
So what is Dakota Maurice and why that name?
As mentioned before I was surrounded by engineering growing up, fast cars, fast bikes, in fact anything that had an engine and was hell bent on moving rapidly. One of my first and favourite aircraft to draw was a DC3, more commonly known as a Dakota. I can't recall where that inspiration came from, perhaps it was in a film or I had seen a photograph of one and decide to redraw it for myself, so that explains that element of the name. As for the Maurice part, I spent a lot of time with my mother's father in Dublin and his name was, yes you've guessed it, Maurice. He had a huge impact on my life, the saddest part for me is I didn't fully appreciate it until is was too late and he had sadly left us. To this day his wise words whisper to me when I find myself thinking how would he have handled a given situation. He also had a mischievous sense of humour, a characteristic which I am all too happy with to emulate.
So there you have it, Dakota Maurice is a union of a fond memory and someone who had a huge influentce on my life.
Colour has influenced man since the beginning of time, Aristotle attempted to explain it, Da Vinci related it to the elements but it was Isaac Newton who, whilst investigating something entirely different, stumbled upon the truth behind the spectrum. Colour drives our emotions, colour is information, colour becomes sensation the moment light enters our eye and we begin to process, consciously or subconsciously that information in our mind. Colour is light and light is energy, to understand colour adds dimension to life.

Black and white images are for me where the viewers imagination really gets put to work. At first glance a monochrome image may not appear to be saying much but on closer scrutiny it begins to come alive. The contrast of tones from blackest black to the brightest white through an infinite number of shades of grey, the way the lighting of a subject can be used to highlight the textures captured. The imagination then starts to question what colour was that stone wall, how blue was the sky, for an inquisitive mind the questions are endless.
